#15 Set up a Lemonade Stand
I always wanted to do this as a kid (maybe it’s the entrepreneurial spirit in me), but we didn’t live anywhere with a lot of foot traffic (a must have for a successful stand). I asked around and most of my friends did one when they were young and it sparked off a whole conversation for over an hour. It seemed like the kids that actually squeezed their own lemons had more fun (but had to charge more), and the ones that bought the frozen pre-made stuff made more profit.
Whichever method you choose, there are 2 days of fun to be had here. From making the banner to getting the ingredients and making a big batch, to getting petty cash and then marketing the event. There are lots of things to consider but the more the kids get involved the more fun they will have and the more they will learn (yes, this can be an amazing learning experience and an interesting way to meet all the people in the neighborhood).
Here is my home-made lemonade recipe for kids (I promise it will sell well as it tastes awesome):
- Ingredients (for 12 servings ~ scale as desired)
- 1 1/2 cups of sugar
- 2 cups of water (for making the syrup)
- 2 cups of lemon juice (around 10 lemons)
- 6 to 8 cups of cold water (to dilute)
- Directions
- Heat the 2 cups of water (for making the syrup) and the sugar in a saucepan until the sugar is completely dissolved
- Juice the lemons as much as possible using a juicer, gather at least 2 cups
- Add both the juice and the sugar-water mixture into a pitcher or large bowl
- Add 6-8 more cups of cold water (or until it is diluted enough to taste perfect, i.e. not too tangy or too sweet)
- Put in the fridge for about an hour
- Add ice and sliced lemons or limes (for the look of course) and sell to your hearts content (try to use normal glasses so not to waste plastic glasses)
