Free Membership for Autoshare (Toronto)

This is a great offer for anyone who lives in Toronto and doesn’t own a car but does have a driver’s license of course. Autoshare is a car rental service that gives you access to a car whenever you need one even if it’s just for one hour. You can reserve a vehicle 24/7 and get it from the location you’ve chosen. They have more than 135 locations across Toronto.

What’s nice compared to other car rental companies is that you can rent a vehicle for just a few hours, let’s say you need to go to an IKEA store real quick for example. They also have discounts for longer trips, so it shouldn’t cost you more than any other rental service to have a car for a long camping weekend. If you’re not sure whether or not you will like it, you have the option to try it for 30 days and see if it works for you. The membership normally costs $29, so this is a pretty good deal.

Something that’s not deal related but I wanted to share was my thoughts on this kind of scheme. I’m a fan and here’s why. There are currently around 27 million cars in Canada and there is simply no reason for that many polluting machines out there. We only actually use our cars for maybe a few hours a day, the rest of the time they just sit there. I find the idea of any kind of car sharing better for the environment.

We have a similar service here in Montreal, called Communauto, and it is really popular. Some of my friends are members and while they think it’s great because they never have to worry about going to the garage or finding a parking spot during wintertime, they sometimes complain about the bad condition of the cars. Obviously because it is not their own car, I would say that drivers tend to be less careful when using them.

Did you see the nice prints for the new parking sign design by 5 street artists in Toronto? Pretty funky eh? I really like them; this is such a good idea. I wish they’d do the same in Montreal.
