Non Fiction Books:
What to Consider when Buying a Book?
There are a ton of factors to consider before buying a book as a gift, so here are a few ones that I think we should always verify. First, what is the age of the person you’re buying this gift for? This is more important when buying books for kids as there could be a huge difference between books for 4 year old’s and 6 year old’s. Same thing when it comes to books for teenagers, make sure that if you buy a novel it is appropriate for young adults.
The second thing to consider when buying a book is if the person is a heavy reader or not? In other words, do they only read one book a year or do they finish one within 1 week? This could change a lot in what kind of books you should buy. I strongly suggest not to buy a 1,000 page book for someone who doesn’t read a lot as they are not going to read it. If you’re not sure about this, you can always go for a book that is more image focused like a cooking book or a travel one.
And finally and this is probably the most important one, what are the other persons interests and hobbies? For example if you know that the person likes to read, then buy the latest novel from Dan Brown or John Grisham. Or if yo know that they love wine, then go for the 2012 wine guide, etc. There are books for any kind of interests. And finally, something that I’ve learned over the years; people (especially men) that don’t read a lot seem to love biography books on notable people or people they like because it is not all fiction.
If you know that the other person has an e-reader device, you might want to go for ebooks instead. It’s cheaper, but a little more difficult to wrap up at Christmas.
