Hotels.com Discount Codes

Hotels.ca is run by the same company who own Hotels.com, and I bet you can guess what they do. Yes that’s right they offer hotel rooms online both in French and English). Most of the Hotels.ca top deals list Canadian hotels, but their offering is much more than that, in fact it is one of the most comprehensive hotel booking websites out there. What we have tried to do with this article is to detail how to get the most out of Hotels.com and Hotels.ca by providing tips as well as Hotels.com Discount Codes and Promotions.

Hotwire

The other day we wrote a post which has now become extremely popular entitled Priceline Canada. The post talks about how you can get the most out of Priceline and how their system works (with some loopholes we provided). Owing to the huge popularity of the post we decided to write an article on how best to use Hotwire.com and we went out hunting for some Hotwire coupons and promos for you in conjunction, we were surprised with what we found.

Getting right into it “Hotwire.com” is extremely similar to Priceline Canada in that their business models are nearly identical, breaking it down this is what you have to do (the coupons are at the end of this post):

Step 1

First you need to know roughly where you want to go on holiday, in this example I chose Barcelona (as I love the city and have been there many times). Then you need to go to www.hotwire.com (don’t worry Canadians are accepted too).

You are greeted by a multitude of options, like many travel websites they allow you to book nearly anything (from hotwire flights to hotwire hotels and hotline car rentals), including options for booking packages like a flight, hotel and car in all one foul swoop. The options are the usual suspects, the location, the date of travel and the number of passengers. In my opinion I would love to see a little button that says something like ‘flexible with dates’ as you can get some real bargains with date variations, but that’s another story.

For my example I just chose a hotwire hotel room in the city of Barcelona. Once I clicked the little button on the homepage that says “Find a Hotel” I am taken to another page which brings us to step 2.

Step 2

Now this is where it gets interesting and you will notice a few things you may think of as odd. While conventional travel sites allow you to choose a particular hotel or at least note the hotels you may stay in Hotwire doesn’t. What you can choose are the following;

- The Star rating (1-5 stars)
- The area (there is a little pop up map which allows you to choose the area of the city that interests you)

You can now change the criteria to refine your search, or you can sort the hotels (or other travel genres) by price, star rating or best value. The hotels listed use Hotwire’s Hot Rate, which is where hotels sell surplus hotel rooms to Hotwire to fill (thus the bargain you will receive). Once you have found the price and area you want you click continue on the hotel you are interested in (remember you still don’t know what hotel it is, just the star rating and the area).

Step 3 Finishing up

You have now been directed to a new screen which details your travel itinerary (the area, the hotel star rating and the price), there is a handy guide provided by tripadvisor that you can check out, also there is a star rating guide to show you what kind of amenities you can expect from the star rating of your choice, including some example chains that you might be familiar with.

Remember you must be at least 18 years old to book at Hotwire.com, still better than Priceline which is 21 years and older.

You will now be asked to log in or enter as a guest, either way you have to log in or create a Hotwire account for payment. There is a step in the final processing that asks if you want insurance, I have never taken it as it is extremely expensive, my recommendation is to skip this and get insurance somewhere else. The penultimate step is to enter your payment information, you can choose from credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express or the discover card), Paypal or bill me later (this is an alternative option which involves being billed at a later date, if you are short on cash). Once you have entered your info you will be billed immediately, then you just have to wait for confirmation via email that your booking has been completed.

The difference between Hotwire and Priceline Canada

The big difference between Priceline and Hotwire is that Priceline allows you to quote the price you want, allowing you to feel like you are getting a great deal, where as Hotwire just quotes the lowest price they could get from the hotel. In my experience, the end prices between the 2 for the same accommodations are nearly identical, so the only real reason to choose Priceline is if you enjoy the bargaining process or if you are booking quite late and hotels in the area have lots of space they want to sell quickly.
